2009 marks the 36th anniversary for the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival where every year hundreds of thousands of people celebrate at the festival’s many offerings! From galas to golf, wine tastings to sporting events, the festival offers something for everyone! The grand finale, Boardwalk Weekend, is staged along the beautiful Virginia Beach oceanfront where the boardwalk comes alive with plenty of palate tempting treats, fine arts and crafts, magnificent sand sculptures, three stages of musical entertainment, a parade and more! All who attend become immersed in the hospitality only Virginia Beach can offer.

The award winning Virginia Beach Neptune Festival began in 1973 and has blossomed over the years into the city’s largest event and one of the most successful festivals on the East Coast. It has continued to be recognized as among the top 100 celebrations in the nation and continuously ranked as one of the top ten festivals in the region.

Each year King Neptune is chosen along with his royal court to reign throughout the year and over the festival’s events. This year’s events begin in March with the King’s Coronation Gala and continue with an international wine festival and a golf tournament both scheduled in May. A tennis tournament takes place in June and early in September the famous Endless Summer Beach Bash takes over the historic Cavalier Beach Club. Festivities continue in September with events such as the Senior’s Gala, the Fall Wine Festival, and the Sandman Triathlon, all leading up to the festival’s grand finale, Boardwalk Weekend, Sept. 25 – September 27, 2009.

Boardwalk Weekend is three fun-packed days and nights luring visitors and guests from across the mid-Atlantic to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Boardwalk. Weekend highlights include a continual series of daily outdoor concerts along 32 blocks of the Boardwalk with a variety of live music; over 300 artisans showcasing their talent during the Neptune Art & Craft Show; a spectacular Saturday night fireworks display over the Atlantic Ocean; volleyball tournament; surfing classic; Atlantic Regatta; an 8K and a 5K run, new this year. Additionally, the Boardwalk Weekend Parade features more than 85 floats, military units, costumed characters and marching bands along Atlantic Avenue.

Boardwalk Weekend’s signature event is the renowned North American Sandsculpting Competition. Internationally known and one of the largest competitions of its kind on the East Coast, this event has one of the biggest prize purses in the US and draws more than 300 artists in its professional masters and amateur divisions from around the globe to Virginia Beach’s sandy beaches to cultivate their finest masterpieces.

Each year, the Neptune Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the Virginia Beach oceanfront and generated approximately $18 million in economic impact for the City of Virginia Beach. Now in its 36th year, the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival is produced by a private non-profit organization and directed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Support and funding for the event comes from the community at large and corporate sponsorships.
