Published: May 29, 2014

Virginia Beach will host the 21st annual McDonald’s North American Sand Soccer Championships June 6 to 8. More than 100,000 fans and players are expected during the event.

This year, the U.S. Open Pro/Am tournament, the festival’s centerpiece held at the 24th Street stadium, will feature teams from around the country as well as international squads representing Portugal, the Bahamas, Canada and Senegal.

Three local teams, including last year's champions HRSC Elite, will be in the hunt for the $25,000 purse.

On the beach between 14th and 36th streets, competitions will include more than 80 age/skill/gender divisions for amateur athletes ranging from 9 years old to seniors.

Additional sporting events including Coed Flag Football Beach Blastoff, Beach Tennis USA, North American Beach Wrestling Championships, and the North American SANDLAX Championships, will be interspersed among the 62 sand soccer fields.

The North American Sand Soccer Championships have been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of its “Top 20 Summer Events,” and recently selected by Discovery/ESPN as one of the premier sports tourism attractions in the United States.

The McDonald North American Sand Soccer Championships are free and open to the public. Visit for additional information.

Proceeds benefit the privately-operated, 75-acre Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach.
